AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Test fails with "Unable to classify due to background noise" error.

Hearing test keeps stopping stating it is unable to classify due to background noise. The only noise is me breathing! I've tried four times now and can't get through one ear without the test stopping at 75% finished.

Update to my previous post (see below):

I tried the hearing test again on my iPhone 12 Pro using my over-ear aviation headset with gel ear seals covering the ears with the airpods pro - and it worked!

previous post:

Same problem with me - "Unable to Classify" because of background noise. I tried the hearing test on my iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 18.1 more than 15 times, but always failed during the test for the left ear, the test canceled after about 60-80 %. I also tried on an iPhone 12 mini with iOS 18.1 and the hearing test worked 3 out of 6 times. I did the tests in a very quiet room, there was absolutely no noise. I took the data from the successful tests on the iPhone 12 mini and transferred them manually to the Health app on my iPhone 12 Pro so the AirPods can now use that audiogram for adjustments.

I just bought mine today and had the same trouble. I called Apple Support and they had me plug them in to charge and it upgraded the firmware. It takes about 30 minutes to update. I was able to complete the test after that but it took an additional two times to complete. I also breathed through my mouth and slowly as to not make any noise. But it worked and im now good to go.

I got my AirPods Pro2 last week. I had the same problem. I contacted Apple Support and she walked me through different things by connecting to my phone through sharing. Anyway she noticed that the firmware was not up to date. I plugged them in to charge for 45 minutes which is how long it takes for the firmware update and tried again. It took a couple times but it finally worked.

I encountered the same issue, and I found a simple solution that worked perfectly for me. First, insert the AirPods Pro 2 as usual. Then, place a pair of regular over-ear headphones over your ears while performing the hearing test. The over-ear headphones help to significantly reduce external noise, allowing the test to proceed without interruptions. Hope this helps!

I had the same problem and I took the suggestion of someone in this thread to download the Mimi Hearing Test app, which is free. Took that hearing test with no problem, and then used the below instructions to share it with my health app and all my results were imported, and now I’ve been able to set up my new AirPods Pro 2 as a hearing device. It’s pretty cool!

To use your Mimi hearing test results with AirPods Pro 2, first ensure your AirPods are connected to your paired iPhone or iPad. Then, go to Settings, tap your AirPods, then tap Hearing Assistance.Choose "Use a Prior Test Result" and select the Mimi test results saved in your Health app. [1122

Detailed Steps: [1122

  1. Wear your AirPods Pro 2 and ensure they are connected to your iPhone or iPad . [1122
  2. Open Settings on your device . [1122
  3. Tap on the name of your AirPods . [1122
  4. Tap on "Hearing Assistance" . [1122
  5. If you haven't taken a test, tap "Take a Hearing Test" . If you've already taken a test or have results from your doctor, tap "Use a Prior Test Result". [11
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your Mimi hearing test results from the Health app . You may need to select the source of your audiogram (e.g., Mimi) and allow access to your Health data. [112234
  7. Once the audiogram is added, you can adjust the hearing assistance settings in your AirPods Pro 2 settings . [1155

In my case. I had to turn on iCloud in the Heath app and enter all my data such as birth date height with etc. apple help said it need to know I was over 18 even though you answer f that question when you start the hearing test.

it worked for me.

however I had already hanged a few settings and done the things that were posted somewhere else. Like reset phone and air pods and turn on headphones in setting etc

if you call the Apple Store and get to help they should be aware of the issue and the fix

Here's a link to an article on macobserver.com that addresses this problem directly with some suggestions that I haven't seen mentioned in the community postings in this thread. I managed finally managed to get my test to complete using their suggestion to turn noise cancellation on. But there are other ideas presented to try, too.

I hope this helps at least some of the people who have posted here to be able to use the hearing aid capabilities. In my case, I can now hear the difference between when the hearing assistance feature is turned on and off.

After numerous attempts to complete the hearing test, I went into the Settings app on my iPhone and I selected my AirPod Pro 2, and then I turned off the Spatial Audio Head Tracking option. Following that, I was finally able to complete the test and I can tell now that the AirPods are boosting the frequency range where I was found to be deficient. I don’t know if this was just luck or if turning off Spatial Audio Head Tracking option is what resolved the problem but my AirPod Pro 2 is finally functioning as a hearing aid.

Like many others in this thread, I couldn’t successfully get the hearing test to finish and was getting the “Unable to Classify” message.

I use actual hearing aids and asked my audiologist if I could have a copy of my audiogram (the chart of my most recent hearing test). She emailed it to me and I in the Hearing Assistance menu of the AirPods, there was a way for me to enter my results by scanning the test.

You’ll have to be patient while the scan takes place. It scanned mine 20 times before it was all set.

The digitized results matched what my audiologist had charted. When I saved the results, the AirPods worked quite well as a backup set of hearing aids!

Hope this helps!

Using the Mimi Hearing app and inputing the readout into Apple Health was a great tip in this thread - it worked for me first time after several failed attempts in the Apple app and I was able to successfully use my Airpod Pro 2's as a hearing aide immediately. It was wild to listen to the TV and turn them on and off - everything was significantly clearer.
