AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Test fails with "Unable to classify due to background noise" error.

Hearing test keeps stopping stating it is unable to classify due to background noise. The only noise is me breathing! I've tried four times now and can't get through one ear without the test stopping at 75% finished.

Update to my previous post (see below):

I tried the hearing test again on my iPhone 12 Pro using my over-ear aviation headset with gel ear seals covering the ears with the airpods pro - and it worked!

previous post:

Same problem with me - "Unable to Classify" because of background noise. I tried the hearing test on my iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 18.1 more than 15 times, but always failed during the test for the left ear, the test canceled after about 60-80 %. I also tried on an iPhone 12 mini with iOS 18.1 and the hearing test worked 3 out of 6 times. I did the tests in a very quiet room, there was absolutely no noise. I took the data from the successful tests on the iPhone 12 mini and transferred them manually to the Health app on my iPhone 12 Pro so the AirPods can now use that audiogram for adjustments.

A few solutions have been suggested here. One of them was to use a different hearing test. Mimi worked for me, downloadable from the App Store. The hearing test...indeed, any hearing test formatted to be read digitally... serves as the basis for the hearing aid set up. It gets you started and you can adjust from there to make the hearing aids more useful to a given situation.

I almost quit too, but the workaround test was key. Try it if you have not been able to make Apple's test work.

as a fellow AirPod Pro 2 user with no issues whatsoever. Might I suggest downloading the Apple support app and approaching the issue that way. Calling really isn’t the way anymore. Also make sure you have completed the fit test for your ear pieces. Then make sure you’re on the latest software version. If you’ve done all of that properly. Then try hard restarting the phone press volume up then press volume down then hold power until you see the apple symbol reappear. It takes awhile of holding the power button. Then after that I would try completely uninstalling and reinstalling the AirPods themselves. Remember to unpair from Bluetooth and place both AirPods in the case with the top open and hold the button on the back of the AirPods for 5 seconds or until you hear a tone and they flash white again

Like many others in this thread, I couldn’t successfully get the hearing test to finish and was getting the “Unable to Classify” message.

I use actual hearing aids and asked my audiologist if I could have a copy of my audiogram (the chart of my most recent hearing test). She emailed it to me and in the Hearing Assistance menu of the AirPods, there was a way for me to enter my results by scanning the test.

You’ll have to be patient while the scan takes place. It scanned mine 20 times before it was all set.

The digitized results matched what my audiologist had charted. When I saved the results, the AirPods worked quite well as a backup set of hearing aids!

Hope this helps!

Well, on Christmas Day, when I feel pretty grateful, I’d like to report that:

  • I really appreciate that Apple has worked towards this goal of making the AirPod system useful as hearing aids. It was probably a lot of work. And, eventually, the bugs will work out of the process.
  • I really appreciate that, for the present, a third party hearing test, like the Mimi test I used, can serve to get the hearing aids up and running. It doesn’t have to be the Apple test! Kudos for allowing that flexibility.
  • I tried out the hearing aid set up at a little concert and reception on Sunday evening, and wow, it takes some old ears to new places. The ‘tuning’ for the situation has to be worked on, but that is true for each individual.
  • It may be that a better hearing test will provide a better baseline, but once you get a hearing test loaded, any hearing test you can take, you can start to learn about the system.
  • Finally, I appreciate the comments and suggestions in this community, which led me to understand different approaches I might take to make this all work.
  • HAPPY NEW YEAR! (Adjusted for bass, treble, balance and background noise…;-))
