Why isn’t Apple Intelligence supported on older iPhones?!?!

I just downloaded iOS 18.1 I was really excited for Apple intelligence but turns out Apple doesn’t support it on my iPhone 13 Pro Max because Apple thinks iPhones older that the 15 are “Slow”. Apple please bring Apple Intelligence to the older iPhone models I was upset when I found out my phone does not support Apple Intelligence.

iPhone 13 Pro Max, iOS 18

Apple probably doesn't read this, provide your feedback here : Product Feedback - Apple

As far as "Why", I think it's important to keep in mind that one thing that makes Apple Intelligence different from ChatGPT and it's competitors is that it's built from the ground up to be run locally. While I agree that Apple could easily run all the queries through the cloud for devices, they have clearly decided not to do so, which brings me back to the feedback link above.

It’s a cost issue. All phone makers, but especially I’ve noticed with Apple are about forcing upgrades. An iPhone after about two years becomes rapidly obsolete as far as actual useful upgrades. Making you switch phone or like me, go android till the phone I want comes down below 800.00 a phone. I love Apples security, the fact I don’t get hacked like I do on android, but I’m not sure that outweighs the stupid high cost of a phone you’ll have to replace right away and people like myself can’t afford that so we’re sol. Just my two cents. It makes good sense on a marketing level just not a consumer level.

No one is “making” you switch phones. The phone you have still does everything that it did when you got it. There is nothing obsolete about it. But the reality is that AI requires a very powerful neural engine that simply isn’t in the iPhone 14 series, or even in iPhone 15s except for the Pro models. If manufacturers were forbidden from improving products to add more capabilities we would still be using IBM PCs, and not even the 2nd generation XT.
