Can I use a late 2015 iMac as a monitor for a 2023 MacMini M2

I have a late 2015 27" imac that is no longer upgradeable as far as OS is concerned. I want to replace it with a Mac Mini if i can use my imac as a display. Is this Possible?

iMac 27″, macOS 12.7

A 27" Late 2015 iMac is still a very nice machine. Although you can't update it past Monterey – and are therefore locked out of current Adobe and Microsoft applications – Monterey is enough to run the current versions of

  • Firefox
  • LibreOffice
  • The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP)
  • The commercial Affinity V2 applications (Photos, Designer, Publisher)

The machine has USB 3.0 ports and can take up to 64 GB of RAM.

If the Mac is in good condition, and you don't want to use it any more, you could perhaps sell it, and put the cash towards the purchase of a standalone hardware monitor for a new Mac. Or donate it to a non-profit organization who could use it, with the above-listed applications, for general office purposes.

If you do this, be sure to prepare the system properly for a new owner.

No.

Target Display Mode went away when the first 27" 5K Retina iMac came out in Late 2014. Your Late 2015 iMac does not support it. In addition, Apple added restrictions on Target Display Mode that mean that recent Macs – including the Mac mini – do not support using ANY iMac (even an older one) as a Target Display.

Your Late 2015 iMac is also too old to be an AirPlay Receiver for AirPlay to Mac (a lower-quality way of using a Mac's screen to display video from an iPhone / iPad / Mac).

There are third-party workarounds (Luna Display (Astropad), Duet Display, third-party AirPlay applications to let the iMac act as a sort of "AirPlay Receiver"), but all of them involve compromises – they are not as good as a hardware-supported video connection to a 27" 5K Apple Studio Display. You would still want a real monitor … the iMac would act as a second screen that might not be appropriate for fast-changing video content (games, video editing).

What you wish is not possible. The iMac is not a monitor.

Once upon a time with very limited models it was possible with target display mode, but no longer. Apple killed that feature in hardware a decade ago. It died in software with Big Sur.

There are some third-party software options that may work, but would still require a dedicated monitor to setup on the mini. Performance of those software options is also limited, not good for gaming or sports viewing or use for a monitor that requires displaying quickly moving images.
