Erasing Objects in Apple Photos Editor

How does the native iOS 17 photo editor’s object eraser (which looks like - toggle on an eraser on the end of a pencil) work compared to the pixel eraser (which is also a toggle on the end of the pencil eraser)? For me the pixel eraser erases only what I draw on the photo. When I toggle it to the object eraser, it erases nothing. What is it supposed to be doing, and/or, what am I doing wrong ?

One instruction told me it was on the magic wand but I have no eraser choices there.

The Markup tools work only on the marking up that you do-- they don't affect the picture, itself. And a markup session cannot be used to erase a previous markup.

The pixel eraser erases tiny bits at a time, so you can turn a big handwritten O into a C. The object eraser may see the O as a single object, and it will erase the whole thing at once.
