How can I use the eraser option in photo editing?

What is the markeup pixel/object eraser in iOS supposed to do?

In the latest iOS I wanted to blur or erase some peoples' names in a screenshot. I did edit, then chose markup, then chose the eraser. There was a choice between pixel or object eraser. I tried both, but neither had any effect at all on the image. How is it supposed to work

iPhone 12 mini, iOS 17

The eraser toll is to be used to erase markups you have added. You cannot use it to erase objects in the original image, only the graphics you have just added, see: Use Markup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Erase or undo a drawing

To redo a drawing, tap the eraser button and rub your finger across the area you want to erase. You can also undo any markup action by using the Undo button. If you accidentally undo a markup, you can shake your device and tap Redo.

To be able to erase objects from your image you will need to upgrade to iOS 18 and probably your iPhone model as well. On supported iPhone models you will be able to use the clean-up tool, once the new Apple Intelligence tools are available in your country.
