How do I know nearby wifi channel and 5Ghz vs 2.4Ghz?

I have new neighbors and I've been noticing my signal dropping off in my bedroom closest to their home. I'd like to find out what the channel and frequency they are using so I can change mine. I use to be able to find this in the Airport Utility. I can see mine by doing an Option + click on the Wifi icon. But I can't see nearby details. I can only see the names of nearby networks.

Right. Wireless Diagnostics, built into every Mac, will give you a good picture of WiFi channel usage around your location.

And, just in case you need the information ...

On 2.4GHz, only channels 1, 6 & 11 are non-overlapping. Pick the one not being used by anyone else. Don't use 2-5 or 7-10 as they will always encounter contention from 1, 6 or 11 or pairs of them.

On 5GHz the best channels are 149, 153, 157, 161, 165 as they have stronger signal and are often unused.

  • However, there can be contention if someone is using bonded channels such as ch. 151 which overlaps both 149 & 153; or ch. 159 which overlaps 157 & 161; or ch. 155 which overlaps all four. So, imho, the clearest 5GHz channel to use is usually 165.
  • There are additional 5GHz channels 36, 40, 44 and 48 but they are less powerful and used more often. And bonded channels 38, 42, 46 & 50 overlap them.

Hi Jdub, changing the frequency may help but won't fix the issue, so if you still want to change the GHZ, connect to their WIFI and check it out. It's best to just go over and honestly tell them your issue and ask to connect for a quick moment. After you check and change your GHZ and it works, you're set. If not, buy a wireless internet extender and put it in the room where you're having issues. Thanks, Jdub. If you're still having issues, reply to this message with your exact issue.
