Photos in maps

If I open the map feature in Photos, the map will display a small box where photos were taken at a certain location. The small box also details how many pictures were taken at that location, however when I click on the box it tells me there’s no pictures to see, even though I have taken dozens at the location. It did used to show all the pictures. Is this a known problem and is there a work around?

Well, yeah, it should have. Do you use iCloud Photos? Do you have Optimize turned on?

Try these things:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it
  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon.
  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

This works fine for me. How long has it been since you updated? It takes a while for Photos to scan all the pictures and make the map. I've seen, for instance, that when transferring pictures to my phone, the pictures will show up, then the empty albums show up later, and then finally the albums become populated with pictures. You may be seeing this with map "albums."
