There are many bugs on Mac Chess that need to be worked on. The recent update was mainly just a visual update without focusing on the bugs. It was mentioned on multiple sites that Apple will hopefully fix the amount of bugs within Mac Chess but for later down the road.
I am not fully aware of the bug you mentioned as I have not experienced the bug firsthand but I have heard of it (Computer's unbeatable difficulty spike). It is just one of the many bugs they need to fix so Mac Chess can be both playable and enjoyable. I can name some other bugs that I have noticed.
- Bugged Achievements: With the 'Lightning Loss' achievement, I have found a game of Suicide Chess on the internet that works with one side winning but when I recreate the game with the human vs human setting on, it always says the game has ended in a draw even if one side has loss all pieces within 20 moves.
- 3 Hidden Achievements: I am concerned that the 3 Hidden Achievements are also bugged out and are unable to be completed. I do not even know how to get them in the first place (I feel the less than 0.1 of people who got the achievement were only testers).
- Crazyhouse Hints: When asking for a hint on Crazyhouse mode, normal hints regardless of mode say where to put a piece (Knight to E3) but when asking for a hint in putting a captured piece back on board, it does not show or say which piece they recommend to put there (knight, pawn or bishop for example).
- Improved Hint System: Patch up or improve the overall hint system as I feel the hints given out are just random hints with no thought about them. Make them more relevant to the skill level of the computer as I have felt the computer always beats you regardless of hints.
- Speech File Prompt: Originally on an earlier version of Mac OS you would get a prompt to download a file that will help with the whole 'speaking your moves' when starting Mac Chess, but on later Mac OS versions (Ventura and Sonoma), the download does not go through properly and you will keep getting a prompt every time you start up Mac Chess. I grew tired and clicked on the do not show again tick mark and now that Mac Chess has been updated, I wonder if that is still an issue and where I can activate the prompt again.
I have already posted a bug report a while back via the Mac OS Feedback page and not the Macbook Air Feedback page as Mac Chess is a software within Mac OS.
