That's what can happen when a phone is not in a protective case. Something so simple could have avoided this. But to think Apple will magically create coatings, which can't be scratched, isn't likely something you'll see.

Coatings can chip and can scratch, and aluminum, titanium, and other metals used in an iPhone and elsewhere are not known for integrating color throughout the full depth of the material.

Same issues for vehicles and vehicle paints, for buildings and paints, and any number of other coatings found in modern usage.

Figure out how to do that color integration both cost-effectively and without materially diminishing the necessary properties, and make yourself a fortune.

Otherwise, these are coatings, and damage can remove the coating.

Proper protective cases can help reduce the damage to coatings, and to the device itself.

Otherwise, the devices will accrue a patina.

I'm very clearly aware the finish, if not protected can chip and is considered cosmetic damage, which isn't covered by warranty and could have easily been prevented by putting your phone in a case.

That's normal wear and tear, nothing to fix per se.

Hello~ We are most certainly aware of this issue in particular. We answer questions about this each day. The best practice is to put your iPhone into a good quality case thus eliminating this type of problem. You could still put a case on your iPhone to cover the cosmetic damage and insure that more of it doesn’t occur.
