what cable to use for CarPlay with my iPhone 13 Pro and 2022 Subaru Outback.

Pardon my ignorance.....but do I need to buy a different cable to fit into my Outback's port so I can use CarPlay? The charging cables I have don't seem to fit! I just bought the car used and have never used CarPlay before. Thanks so much for any help you guys can give!

Four things to note:

  1. The USB port type in your vehicle. Up to just very recently, they are typically USB-A type ports. These are being replaced with smaller USB-C type ports.
  2. Your iPhone 13 Pro comes with a Lightning port.
  3. The USB port in your vehicle must support both data and charging. Some only support the latter. You may have to check with your owner's manual or your car dealer to verify what is actually available.
  4. Apple CarPlay can be accessed either by wire or by wireless ... but a car manufacturer may only implement one or the other. Some, on the newest 2023-2025 models, support both.

Ok, with all that said, I'm going to assume the following. Your Subaru has USB-A ports. As such you would just need a USB-A to Lightning cable to connect your iPhone. An example would be the following one from Apple.

Hello nanciepants,

Thank you for contacting the Apple Support Community. To utilize CarPlay with your iPhone 13 Pro and your 2022 Subaru Outback, it is imperative that you employ a high-quality, compatible Lightning to USB cable. It is possible that the charging cables you mentioned may not be compatible due to variations in port design. For optimal performance, we recommend utilizing an official Apple Lightning cable or a certified third-party MFi (Made for iPhone) Lightning cable that is specifically designed for data transfer, rather than charging alone.

If the cable is securely inserted into the port and CarPlay still fails to activate, it is advisable to verify that CarPlay is enabled within the system settings of your vehicle and your iPhone. Additionally, ensure that both your vehicle and iPhone are running the most recent software updates.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Apple Support Community if you encounter further difficulties. I wish you a safe and enjoyable driving experience.
