screen very unresponsive after update to 11.1 apple watch series 8

Apple watch series 8 updated to os 11.1 problem entering startup code as screen very unresponsive

Charging Apple Watch

take off charger

put on wrist

Try to enter code (4 digits)

all digits are very hard to enter

position on number and unless exactly on centre either does not respond or gives incorrect number

many tries later on all the digits i can manage to set the start up code corectly

This has never happened before

It shakes my belief in Apple being so customer friendly
