Need to update second Apple ID

Somehow I have ended up with two Apple ID's. Cannot update credit card on Macbook for the "second / newer" Apple ID as it must be done on an iOS device but my iPhone won't let me add the second Apple ID as the "second / newer" Apple ID email is showing as taken and cannot sign out of my "first / primary" Apple account ID on iPhone without first adding a replacement Apple ID email? This seems counterintuitive, any suggestions how to solve this issue please?

You should be able to log in with the secondary Apple ID at https://appleid.apple.com and update your payment method there.

Also, you should not need to add another email to sign out of an Apple ID from the iPhone, changing the email address is not signing out by the way. It's a bad idea to sign out anyway as you can lock the previous one out for 90 days.

In any case, if you really want to log out on your iPhone, you simply need to go to Settings ➜ Apple ID ➜ (Scroll to the bottom) Sign out.

Or if all you want is to change the Apple ID being used for Media and Purchases, you can go to Settings ➜ Apple ID ➜ Media & Purchases ➜ Sign out.
