Why is the App Store charging to download free apps?

So I’ve had this issue a couple of times where i try to download a FREE app and it wants me to add my card info. i add my info just because maybe it just wants a card on file, but then it charges my card. the first time it was 10.25 so i just paid it, but now it’s 10.76 and i dont have enough money on my card and so i cannot download any apps. what is going on and how can i resolve it??

Apple does not charge for free apps. If you have a pending charge for something, then it will request a valid payment method to complete it before allowing you make use of the App Store services, be it downloading free or paid apps or even updating existing apps.

Pending charges can happen when you download an app that offers a free trial, as those usually turn into paid subscriptions unless you manually cancel them.

You will need to check your active subscriptions and cancel any you don't want. However, the current pending charge will still need to be covered, there's no way to avoid that. Once it's paid, you can request a refund for it.

When downloading apps, always make sure you cancel any free trials they may have before they renew.
