Apple watch using excessive data every 6 hours

Our daughter has an Apple watch with a cellular plan from AT&T. She does not have an iPhone so the watch is linked to my (her dad’s) iPhone.

We have seen excessive data use on her watch and are trying to find out what’s causing it. We noticed that her watch uses up to 100MB of data 4 times a day, exactly every 6 hours. What could be causing this and how can we stop the process responsible? As it is, this process uses up to 400MB of data per day and this quickly exceeds our monthly data limit on the plan.

I’m including example data below:

11/01/2024 11:41:17 PM

90.99 MB

11/01/2024 05:41:17 PM

104.32 MB

11/01/2024 11:41:17 AM

80.18 MB

11/01/2024 05:41:17 AM

85.15 MB

If you're getting those statistics and times from your carrier, they are probably reporting usage on a schedule. The usage most likely did not occur exactly at those times. Their equipment is reporting at those times and that's most likely usage between the last report and that report.

You really need to consider moving to one of AT&T's unlimited plans. The amount of data being used is not excessive.
