Would clamshell mode work on a mid 2014 MacBook Pro? Having done some research I haven’t noticed anyone mention that you need a certain macOS and with mine being outdated by a couple of years, I’m just wondering if the feature’s release date was a cut off point? In other words… when was it added as a feature and is my computer outdated?

"clamshell mode" dates back to the old PowerBooks and I've not heard or encountered any Apple laptop (except the old eBook) since that didn't support it. You'll need an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, but it should work unless something's serious amiss with your MacBook. For some additional discussion, see:
