Finder password - needed to transfer files to App folder, but never set one up? confused.

When trying to transfer a .dmg file from downloads to applications folder it is asking for my Finder password - I have tried entering my power password as I don't recall setting a Finder password - any suggestions

A finder password is normally required when making certain changes or doing an app installation. Note: you do not place a dmg file directly into the Applications folder. I move the file to my desktop, then open it and complete the installation before moving the dmg file to the Trash. Since you chose not to save your personal password it will need to be reset. Use the link below and this time write down the information and save it in a secure place for next time.

Thanks Ronasara, I do know my Mac login password (I use this every other day due to work security - my touch id requires the password every 48 hours) and my Finder username - however Finder is rejecting either one or both. The .dmg file is asking to be dropped into the App folder - I have dropped to my desktop and tried to open but it will not open unless it is in the App folder (it is a proxifier app to allow jumphost sessions). Looking at the link it is asking me to reset my login password - do you know if the Finder password and the login password is the same thing - because if it is and I already know it surely it should work??? I feel like I am now stuck in a loop of silliness.
