A SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) identifies you, and your cellular plan.

A SIM can be either

  • A physical card ("SIM card") that you install into a slot or tray on a phone, or
  • A set of information ("eSIM", "electronic SIM") that you electronically load onto your phone

Ether way, the use of the SIM is the same. The important thing is about a SIM is that it is like a transit pass; in this case, one showing that your phone has a right to access a particular carrier's network.
