Apple Pay tells me I have to walk into a bank to activate my new debit card has anyone else had this issue?

I just got a new debit card because the other one expired. At first it let me update it on the wallet and apple id.....it worked then I bought something else later and it delclined I called the bank they locked the card so they unlocked it. I deleted the old card put the new card in and it was ok at first then but now under apple pay it says its not activated. So when I called the digital wallet of my bank it said I have to walk in the bank to have the set the apple pay up. Has this happened to anyone before? Where they make you walk into the bank to activate apple pay?

Apple doesn’t approve or decline adding a card to Apple Wallet. Apple states so in several support articles and white papers. It’s your bank that requires your card to be activated or wants you to go to the bank to verify your identity.

>>Adding additional verification

A card issuer can decide whether a credit or debit card requires additional verification. Depending on what’s offered by the card issuer, the user may be able to choose between different options for additional verification, such as a text message, email, customer service call or a method in an approved third-party app to complete the verification. For text messages or email, the user selects from contact information the issuer has on file.

A code is sent, which must be entered into Apple Wallet, Settings or the Apple Watch

app. For customer service or verification using an app, the issuer performs their own communication process.

Please read my prior post to you. I explained that Apple has nothing to do with this. Your bank, not Apple, is insisting you do this.

The person on the phone you spoke to was a representative of your bank. You were talking to your bank, not Apple.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but like you, Apple is at the mercy of your bank. They can’t add something to Apple Wallet that doesn’t belong to them. Your bank controls what the card is added to. I’m sorry. I hope all goes well for you.

>>If your bank has a Jim/James problem, then that is on them.<<

Each bank will have their own policies and perhaps algorithms to try to resolve the conflict. But any document, account etc. should be done in your legal name. This is a known issue in government identity verification procedures. Most banks and third party verification services check your social security information and SS uses your birth certificate. Your name is your name.

I have the same issue. My birth certificate says one thing and I go by Jeff. Even more confusion is throwing in my last name that can also be a first. I learned the hard way a long time ago to always use the name on my BC.

Yea, I guess I should have said that it is their requirement. I didn't mean to imply that it is unreasonable. I can't argue the fact that your legal name should be used for all financial/legal documents, it just did not make a difference for my bank when they approved the James card in the Wallet for my Jim Apple ID information.

Yea I know that thread I am the one who made the thread a few days ago. I made this one because I was still having issue and wanted to see if others had it too

That was the point to explain that it was continued from your previous post. The more information that is available, the more likely you are to get an appropriate explanation.

Yes I know this. When I went to settings apple wallet/pay it said confirm your new card then then it said call this number at my bank. I did. I called a few times. Got different stories each time I called. The first time I called they sent me a code to my email. I told them the code they said it was saying on their end of the computer i had to walk into the bank to do more steps. Im not sure what else they will do in person. Its all weird. The first time I added the card to wallet it was fine and let me use it. THEN the next day it locked it so I had my bank unlock it. They said it was fine then I scrolled down in settings apple wallet/pay it said my new card needed to be verified when it was. Or I thought it was at least. Problem is I have things coming out of my subscription tomorrow so I need them to fix this. Even though I have money on the apple account. My bank told me on the phone they dont offer the text the code to me option.

Im going in tomorrow. Im disabled so its tough to go in to do this. Thats why I was asking on here why they were making me go in to the store to have it done. You mentioned on another post that the bank may not recognize my name on the account if its different than whats on apple account or what on the bank account. I was asking you which you never answered me. I was asking you I wonder if it makes a difference if a person goes by Jim but their legal name is James. Their legal name would say James on the bank account but what if they have on apple their name Jim. Does it make a difference? It shouldnt right?

Nov 15, 2024 8:27 AM in response to countrylizzard

I can confirm Jim/James makes no difference, at least for my bank. My bank knows me as James and Apple knows me as Jim and I have never had any problem adding a card. Let us know the reason your bank is telling you that you had to come in to get it verified. If they tell you Apple requires it, then they are simply lying so you do not get mad at them. If your bank has a Jim/James problem, then that is on them.

Yea the bank said on the phone that on their end of the computer screen it said "apple wants you to come into the bank to have it verified". I read another post somewhere else that said "are you adding it to apple account or apple wallet" which in my opinion I thought that was the same thing. MAYBE not? I know for me it worked when I added to apple account (or so I thought because it let me use it once) then when I went to settings scrolled to apple wallet it said please verify. Im saying if it went through on apple account then it shouldve been verified on apple wallet no?

Nov 15, 2024 9:30 AM in response to countrylizzard

Nope the Apple Account and the Wallet app are totally different. Your Apple Account is only used for purchases that are billed by Apple. It does not require verification by your bank. If the card that you add to your Apple Account is not valid, Apple will simply not allow you to make any purchases in the App Store until the issue is resolved.

When you add a card to your Wallet, you are capable of using the card for any purchase that the bank must authorize to complete. Before your bank can authorize a charge that is made, they want to make sure it is actually you attempting to make the charge to prevent fraud. This is done when you add the card to the Wallet and the bank will either Approve/Deny it. These transactions are between your bank and the merchant and the only involvement by Apple is providing a unique code to the merchant so your credit card details are not exposed. Apple does not approve/deny the charge and if you wanted to dispute the transaction, you would have to do that with the bank, since they approved it.

Yea that was my thing, I had no place to enter the code because when I went to settings scrolled down to apple wallet/pay all it said was waitng for confirmation so when I click that it went to the next page that had a phone number to call to my bank. It wouldve been easier had I been allowed to enter the code myself somewhere in the apple wallet section but oh well it didnt give me a space. Just the phone number.

Yea thats true, hopefully they wont make me change the icloud name. Im right now reading what happens when u change the icloud name. That would suck if I had to change that to my legal name. Im just nervous that if I change the icloud name it will lock me out of icloud cuz they may not recognize me. Its just a display name in my opninion. My email that I login is still the same

Apple Pay tells me I have to walk into a bank to activate my new debit card has anyone else had this issue?
