I am preparing a scoring spreadsheet for tracking stocks. The last column provides the score for any row which is a listed stock. Is there a way to attribute a value to a word or a letter? In this case I will note that a year over year revenue is increasing which I denote as "Up" or "U" for which I would like to assign a value in the scoring column. How do I attribute a value for "Up" or "U" in the score column.

You can try something like this, changing or adding switch-value, if-match pairs to suit your setup.
In D2 of my example, filled down:
=SWITCH(C2,"U",10,"D",−10)
