Apple Watch Locked to Owner

Friend gave me his Apple Watch and it is locked to owner. I’m in communication with him but he also cannot remember his Apple ID and password. The serial Number is GJ9******. He is still able to access the Gmail account associated with the APPLE ID but I have the watch and he is the one that needs to communicate with Apple support to grant them permission to take off the Activation lock. I can’t expect him to want to put in a ton of effort but I’d really like to use the watch
