You mentioned PhonePe and Google Pay – but said you needed iOS 16.

If you are by any chance wanting to carry out UPI payment transactions in India, you need at least iOS 17. NPCI, the outfit that makes the rules for the UPI payment system, apparently has mandated that all UPI payment apps require iOS 17 or higher.

It would be a mistake for you to replace your iPhone 7 with an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X that can run iOS 16 but nothing higher, as you would soon discover that the people running the UPI payment system have decided to lock out those phones, as well.

The developers at the banking apps have decided that they will not allow users who are running older iOS versions like iOS 15 to use their app.

This was a decision by the banking apps......not Apple.

The developers could have very easily decided to continue to allow iOS 15 users to log on, but have decided otherwise. By doing this, the banking app has abandoned you and in effect is forcing you to buy a new phone to use their app. Since the banking apps have decided for you what you want, they expect you to understand and agree with their decision.

Apple is not involved with this in any way.
