Notes from my iPhone disappeared post accepting new iCloud Terms and Condition.

I got a notification from settings saying to accept the new iCloud terms and conditions if i wanted to keep using iCloud on my phone (iPhone 12 pro max) I accepted and everything was normal but then I opened my notes app and all of my notes were GONE. I logged into my iCloud account and saw my most recents were there but I still don’t understand why all of my notes are completely deleted from my phone. They’re very important to me and I need them in my phone. Is there any way I can get them back? How could this happen?

I experienced this too on my iPhone 7 the day after I agreed to the updated iCloud terms and conditions (11/5/2024). No notes existed within the Notes app. However, I found that my Notes are tied to my iCloud account so I logged into icloud.com and found them there, yay! Next was to figure out how to get them on my phone. My iCloud account was listed under Settings > Notes > Accounts, but I was afraid to make any changes. So, I contacted Apple Support and we found a solution:

  1. Deleted the Notes app
    1. Since my notes data was tied to my iCloud account, it retained it. If your notes are local, it would delete them if you delete the Notes app.
  2. Redownloaded the Notes app from the Apple Store
  3. Opened the Notes app. No notes were there.
  4. Once the Notes app was opened, it prompted me to connect my iCloud account with a pop up that took me to Settings > Notes > Accounts > my iCloud account > iCloud. From there, we toggle the button next to Notes so it was On (aka Green) - screenshot below with the backup option for Notes toggled On
  5. I may have had to close the Notes app again but I forget. Either way, once we toggled the iCloud backup icon to On for Notes, this allowed for the notes to start downloading to my phone again!

I hope this may help someone too! So sorry folks are going through this.

after reading someone was advised to delete notes app then download it again. I decided to back up my phone first. Which automatically backed up older ipad that had icloud notes. At some point I went back into setting my name and notes. Turned sync this phone off for about a minute turned it back on. Was about to delete notes app and icloud folders were back loading back onto phone!! I had turned battery saver off. Next time I do anythi g like this againI will turn battery save off, back up my device. Now got to consider IOS 18. But not after todays problems

Hi,

I think you may be looking in the ‘Manage Account Storage’ menu which will shows the message that all notes will be deleted from iCloud…don’t do this!

Just underneath that option you’ll see ‘Apps using iCloud’. Click ‘Show All’ then go to Notes and carry on from there. It will pop up with the message that it will delete all iCloud messages from this device which is fine as it will put them back on when you reselect it.

Just be sure to read the pop up warnings carefully as some people may have different set ups to me.

Hope this helps! 👍

Hi,

Had this too and found a simple fix….

1) Go to Settings and search for iCloud

2) Select iCloud Apple ID (at the top of the list)

3) Under ‘Apps using iCloud’ select Show All

4) Select Notes

5) Turn off ‘Sync this Phone’ and wait for a few seconds

6) Turn ‘Sync this Phone’ back on

This should kick the notes app back into life to use iCloud again.

Hope this works for you and helps a few others along the way 😊

This morning I see the iCloud T&C alert on the lock screen.

Sadly, Apple doesn't tell us what has changed, so I scroll through the entire EULA and don't see anything suspicious. Once again, a software update wasting my time. 😤

I accept the T&C, and it required my iPhone (11 Pro) lock screen code. I've never seen this type of behavior before, after an Apple app update. Maybe it's 'cuz iCloud?

I tell Wifey and she spots the problem: Notes app has no notes.

I come to this fine community to find the solution of un-sync'ing then re-sync'ing Notes in the Control Panel.

Well, I get skittish at the last moment and don't un-sync, 'cuz I see several megabytes of storage used, and that Notes is [correctly] using iCloud. This was odd 'cuz Notes indicated zero notes/data. Therefore, there must be some data the app has stored, right?

I go back to Notes and see nothing. Then I go back to the Control Panel/iCloud/Notes and see the spinning spokes (not the beachball). I go back to Notes and the number of notes begins increasing. I go back to Settings and everything looks correct. Back to Notes and—thankfully—all my notes are there.

Dear Apple,

When giving us T&C updates, please tell us what changed. It can't be that difficult.

Sincerely,

Apple iCloud users.

So others have mentioned changing the default account helps, and it did for me with an additional step. If when you look at your default accounts you don’t see iCloud directly listed as an option, just your other emails and/or On My iPhone, then you need to go back a page, and re enter your associated iCloud account. I then unselected on my iPhone as the default, selected iCloud, and re-selected On My iPhone as the default account. After a while my notes loaded again. I did still lose quite a few from the On My iPhone account but the iCloud ones were mostly recovered to my knowledge. Hope you get them restored!
