Contact the carrier.

What they are likely referring to is a carrier-provided mechanism that blocks telephone number porting without sufficient proof.

AT&T uses what they call a number-transfer PIN: https://about.att.com/pages/cyberaware/ni/blog/porting

Comcast Xfinity references PINs when porting here: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/local-number-portability

My understanding (according to xfinity’s own website) is that in order to have my phone number ported over to a new carrier, I need to have my phone number unlocked on my phone as well as a porting PIN provided by xfinity.

so what I’m after, which makes no reference to SIM or eSIM, is how to, in essence, free up my phone number in order to release it from one carrier in order to use it with new carrier.

ive gone thru Settings and am not finding it.
