I bought my son a new battery for his old 2014 MacBook Pro. He never used it because he bought a new MacBook. The battery was never used or opened up and is still in the packaging but is two years old. It is an OEM APPLE battery. Is is still good?

Lithium Ion batteries do NOT like too sit unused for long periods of time, and can swell up as a result. That doesnt mean that this Apple battery necessarily has swollen up yet, but it is a risk. Other than that, your best bet is too open up the box and too see if the battery shows any signs of swelling (if you are unsure of what a swollen lithuim ion battery is, or looks like, please do some additional research before using the battery).
If the battery is not swollen, it should be safe too use for the meantime, with the only issue being that the charge the battery will hold may not be as great as it could be, due too sitting for awhile. However, if you do put the computer back into commission with the battery, make sure too keep an eye out for symptoms of swelling, as the time the battery has been sitting could still cause it too swell if you start using it.
Just want to say though... are you sure that is a OEM apple battery? Where did you get it from? Generally, getting OEM parts from apple is not possible unless your an authorized technician, in my experience... Just make sure to verify that it came from apple, and that your son didn't buy it off of some eBay listing. It is important to verify, as the OEM batteries are higher quality than the knock off ones, where knock off battery will be more prone to age and swelling issues due to the poor quality of them.
If you do decide to replace the battery, make sure to do thorough research, or have a technician replace it, as the batteries are stuck in using adhesive, in which if you are not carful, you can puncture the battery if you try to forcefully remove it.
Also... if that 2014 MacBook Pro still has its original battery in it, I recommend you open it up and look at it ASAP, as the 15' inch models are notorious for their batteries swelling up. If you do find that the battery is swollen, do NOT charge or use the computer, and have the Apple store (Apple may replace it for free) or a technician remove the battery immediately, and recycle it.
