Is it possible to export or edit movies in the requisite aspect ratio for different social platforms. For example an IG reel requires a 9:16 aspect ratio.

Hi,
You can export a 9:16 clip but the exported product will have black bars on each side to make it fit iMovie's native 16:9 screen. One cannot change the 16:9 aspect ratio.
To fix that, use the crop controls to rotate the clip sideways so that it fills the 16:9 screen. Then export it to your desktop in the sideways configuration. Open it in QuickTimePlayer and rotate it right side up again. That will leave you with a 9:16 video without black bars.
