and I tried the apps installation disk and it keeps giving me installation failed
What apps specifically?
A constant danger in an erase and reinstall on an older computer is that apps you own may never reinstall. Example: Microsoft takes down its activation servers for older versions of Office. Even if you have a valid key, the apps can't be reinstalled, and new versions of Office can only be installed on macOS versions your Macbook Pro is too old to run.
I would first try getting the computer back to its maximum OS possible, 10.13 High Sierra. See:
How to download and install macOS - Apple Support
I would try upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8 or Yosemite 10.10 before trying to reinstall High Sierra. Even at High Sierra, many current apps will not install.
