Transferring data from a 2015 Macbook Pro to a 2024 Macbook Air

I plan to keep my 2015 MacBook Pro as my main computer and use the MacBook Air for traveling. I want to transfer my settings from the 2015, but not all the files. I will be using an external drive for this. What is the best way to transfer? Transfer everything and then delete what I don't want, or just drag and drop what I do want onto the new MacBook Air?

You could try to use the Migration Assistant and only transfer part of the data: Transfer to a new Mac with Migration Assistant - Apple Support.

For a more granular transfer, you could use the target disk mode to copy specific files and folders between the 2 Mac: Transfer files between two Mac computers using target disk mode - Apple Support.
