Sonoma 14.7.1 (23H222) update, private relay is broken

I'm getting Safari errors after yesterday's security update. iOS is fine.

1. Re-enable iCloud Private Relay

Sometimes, toggling Private Relay off and then on again can resolve the issue. Here's how to do that:

  • Go to System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Private Relay and turn it Off.

  • Restart your Mac.

  • After the restart, turn Private Relay back On. This can help reset the connection and fix the problem.

2. Clear Safari Data (Reset Safari)

Corrupted cache or website data in Safari might be causing this issue. Resetting Safari can sometimes resolve these kinds of errors.

  • Open Safari.

  • In the menu bar, click Safari > Preferences.

  • Go to the Privacy tab and click on Manage Website Data.

  • Click Remove All to clear stored website data.

  • Restart Safari and check if the issue persists.

3. Check for macOS Update

Sometimes Apple releases minor updates that fix bugs or compatibility issues. If there’s a fix for this Private Relay issue, it may be available in a newer patch.

  • Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.

  • Check if there's an update available and install it.

  • After the update, restart your Mac and see if the issue is resolved.

4. Change DNS Servers

Some users have reported that switching DNS servers can resolve Private Relay-related issues, especially if there's a conflict with the DNS settings. Here’s how to change your DNS:

  • Open System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced.

  • Click on the DNS tab.

  • Add a new DNS server. You can use:

  • Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

    • Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

  • After changing the DNS settings, restart your Mac and check if Safari is working properly again.

5. Contact Apple Support

If the above steps don't fix the issue, there may be a bug in macOS Sonoma 14.7.1 related to Private Relay that Apple needs to address. In this case, contacting Apple Support would be the next best step. They can either offer a specific fix or escalate the issue if it's a known bug.

I had to write this ticket from memory so forgive me for the lack of detail. All I can remember is after doing the Sonoma security update last night (14.7.1), when attempting to view many of my daily web sites with Safari I was met with a blank page and an error that referred to a problem with Private Relay. When I turned Private Relay off in settings I could view the web sites. Turned PR back on and the problem returned.
