Connecting Mac to PS Dualshock 3 controller.

I'm trying to connect my Macbook to a brand new PlayStation Dualshock 3 controller. I can't get the Bluetooth settings to even recognize the controller at all. I'm wondering if it's because Apple no longer supports this controller, or could there be another issue? I have it plugged in with the USB cable and have tried various combinations of pushing and holding the PS button with the device plugged in and unplugged.
