iCloud Drive has 50 gb of documents - but I don't store documents in iCloud

I have iCloud+ with 200gb of storage with 42 gb free. Mac Mini 2018 Intel i7 with 1tb internal SSD running macOS 14.7 Sonoma.

Currently I have the following on iCloud:

  • 52 gb of photos
  • 5 gb of backups
  • 2.8 gb of Messages
  • 59 MB (not gb) of Mail
  • 48 gb of family (backups and photos primarily)
  • =>the total of the above is 108 gb so there should be 92 gb of "free space" BUT……
  • …BUT I also have 50 gb of Documents! WHY?? I don't have any documents saved (other than 3 files which are less than 1 mb total); and I do NOT have "Documents and Desktop" turned-on on my Mac; and of the 30 apps which can be synced to iCloud I only have 15 of them ticked. The only app that could be taking up appreciable space is WhatsApp with 6.9 gb of backup. Unless "QuickTime" or ??? something else is taking up a huge amount of space? I don't think so…

So what is this 50 gb of "documents" and how to eliminate it and free up all or most of this 50 gb of storage?

Thanks for any comments - this is very perplexing…

Best regards,

Steve Schulte

Thanks for your reply. As I wrote in my initial post - there are 30 other apps which are shown; and I disabled 15 of them. Of those that remain - WhatsApp (which doesn't show on that list) is taking-up 6.9 gb which is fine. But that certainly doesn't account for 50 gb of space used.

I have a lot more than 30 apps on my Mac -- but only 30 show.

This is really a mystery and I know I'm not the only one experiencing this.

Appreciate any additional comments by you or anyone out there--especially if someone has had this issue and solved it.

AlWeir, Thanks for your reply!!

I am not using iCloud for a backup of any data. OK for Photos and Contacts and iOS backups but not for backups of my data and info. For that I do regular SuperDuper! backups (and sometimes CCC backups as well); and also have SugarSync constantly running on my main Mac for backups.

What mystifies me is this "50 gb" of "documents" that is listed (today 51.2 gb). Even including WhatsApp I can't come up with more than 10 gb total - certainly not 50 gb. But while some apps are listed with the amount of space they consume (like WhatsApp - currently 7.7 gb) - others do not show the amount they use-- I expect because it's likely below 1 mb so it is not shown. So where did about 40 gb of my iCloud space go?

Appreciate any comments by you or really any one of the 8 billion people out there-- THANKS!

Interesting suggestion about turning-off iCloud BUT then after a few days when I turn it back on it will take 2 days to upload all my photos - in the meantime all my photos on my iPhone and iPad will be gone… For now I can live with an "unknown missing 50 gb" (actually only about 40 gb as WhatsApp is taking nearly 8 gb…) -- but it sure is a strange way that Apple sets-up iCloud. For the photos / contacts / apps like BusyCal and Notes -- just FANTASTIC - but to use as a repository for my key documents… and then duplicating data on the Mac anyway; and then this mystery with 25% of my 200 gb unidentified… I'll try to call Apple on this but in today's world getting a real live human being on the phone may be difficult if not impossible.

Thanks for any and all comments out there--
