What is the Best Way to Downgrade From Sequoia 15.1 back to Ventura w/ Time Machine Backup?

Hi, I have a 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max (2021) which "had" MacOS Ventura. I made sure to download a full backup using TM "before" updating to MacOS Sequoia 15.1. Once completed, I ejected / removed my dedicated TM external HD. I then proceeded in updating to MacOS Sequoia 15.1 w/ TM

Once updated, everything appeared to be there and ran fine. I followed up by plugging in my Promise Pegasus3 R6 24TB external HD with the latest Pegasus driver update for Sequoia. The Pegasus HD mounted and ran fine..... until I went to eject the drive. I received a Force Eject pop-up "The disk wasn’t ejected because one or more programs may be using it." I checked and re-checked trying to find any running apps.... nothing. I've tried numerous ways to try to fix this for the past couple days but, no go. It also happens on another external HD.

I want to downgrade back to MacOS Ventura with my Ventura TM backup. I've researched this but, I've come across so many different ways which seems conflicting. I would like to know what would be the best way to downgrade back to Ventura with my TM backup? Your help would be sincerely appreciated. Thank You, Ray

I think there is only one way to revert, but there are options as to how you accomplish the reinstall.

The one way to revert is to Erase the drive completely, reinstall the old macOS, and Migrate your user account from Time Machine.

The reinstall part is where you would find differences. In my opinion, a Bootable USB Installer is the only sane option. By using that you have a known bootable device with the macOS version of choice prior to erasing.

Maybe this is another way (probably much safer), if you have enough space on the Startup drive. Add an APFS volume to your startup drive and install Ventura on that. You may still need the bootable USB Installer. Migrate the user account from Time Machine. when everything works as desired, you can remove the Sequoia volumes.

Thank You for the help. I did create a two MacOS's, Ventura & Sequoia on two seperate bootable USB drives from the beginning. I wanted a good clean install so I wouldn't have any hiccup's.

I followed the YT videos below which worked out great.

I followed the first way out of the four;

Thanks again, appreciate the help. Ray

Thank you for the help.... I did contact Promise support and updated the the Driver and changed Full Security to Reduced Security under Hardware > Controller > Boot Policy as Promise support suggested.

I also tried to prevent Spotlight from searching the Pegasus but, I received a pop-up (below) stating Search Privacy > add (+) to prevent Spotlight from searching these locations. My Pegasus was not in the list. I also changed Full Security to Reduced Security under Hardware > Controller > Boot Policy as Promise support suggested. Also, I have a 2TB Seagate external HD that won't eject as well. Thanks again, I sincerely appreciate your help in trying to get this resolved. Ray

From dialabrain;

It's not easy. First you have to create a bootable installer, then erase the drive, then restore your data using the Time Machine backup. As far as ejecting the Pegasus drive, you can always shutdown your Mac, then unplug the drive.

Thanks..... Exactly what I did. Actually is was quite easy following these two YT video's;

I also went into Spotlight settings to turn off indexing on my Pegasus but, I received the following pop-up when I chose it in the Choose window;

I also tried a different EHD in which I was able to choose it. After doing so, I backed out of System Settings and tried to eject the drive..... No luck. I proceeded in logging off / on.... No luck. Problem remains.

System Settings > Spotlight > Search Privacy > Privacy +/- window > + > (Chose the EHD) in the Choose window > (Confirmed) Privacy window
