Removing Duplicate Song Files

Many (all?) of my iTunes music folders contain 2 identical copies of each song. One has the expected filename and the other has the same name with a " 1" appended to it.

When I look at the Song Info in iTunes, it is pointing to the version of the song with the 1 appended to it.

However, my Sonos system points to the version of the song that does not have the 1 appended to it.

What I would like to do is update iTunes so it uses the file without the 1 appended to it.

I figured out a way to do it:

  1. move the files that have the 1 appended to the filename to a temporary folder
  2. try to play the song in iTunes.
  3. when iTunes cannot find the song, I can locate the song and point to the filename without the appended 1.
  4. repeat steps 2 & 3 for all songs in the folder
  5. remove the temporary folder.

Does anyone know how to do something like this for all my songs or for all the songs in an album? I really don't want to do each song manually.

Thanks,

John

See Duplicate songs in iTunes - Apple Community for general background. Use File > Add Folder To Library and select your media folder to add in all of the files not currently known to the library. Then deduplicate the library, either manually by removing the recently added exact duplicate files only, or using my DeDuper script. Once that is done turn off Keep organized then turn it back on again which will remove any trailing digits from filenames that currently have them. Finally make sure that Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Share XML Library... is enabled so that it gets updated whenever you change your library, and make sure that refreshed XML is the one that Sonos is loading. As ever you are advised to backup everything before you start.
