Is Norton app necessary for my MacBook Air?

I run Norton 360 on my MacBook Air 2019 because of work. However, it's now asking me install the Norton App to: protect from malware in real-time; filter network content to keep safe while browsing; to scan entire disk for hidden malware and other threats; and to prevent web attacks on my computer while I am online. Does this app duplicate what my Mac and Safari already do?

Uninstall Norton. It is not needed and it may cause problems. Third party apps that claim to protect, manage, boost performance, etc. are not needed.

You’ll need to discuss the organization’s requirements here with IT. IT can be adaptable and deeply aware of the organization’s requirements and the platforms, or sometimes IT can be run from scripts and best practices and standard procedures, or can be focused on Microsoft Windows realm, and sometimes whether or not you can get work done unfortunately may not feature anywhere in that script.

Yes, add-on anti-malware duplicates what is built into macOS.

Add-ons have a comparatively poor reputation, due to issues of stability and performance, due to not having negligible or negative benefits over the built-in security.

Some is getting more difficult to distinguish from actual malware, with some of the better-known anti-malware apps collecting personally-identified web purchasing and web browsing metadata and reselling it.

And see the Effective Defenses article, linked above.

Only use what is required by your work. Any service that they offer is useless and will result in conflicts and slowing your computer down. Most businesses simply request the use so they appear to be acting proactively without ever knowing the effectiveness or consequences of their decision. Any problems you now have with your computer due to the installation will need to be resolved through your work IT department and with Norton directly, if you are unable to uninstall Norton due to the work requirement.
