Text Replacements Not Working in Messages on Mac

MacOS 14.6.1 Sonoma

Text replacements work fine in most applications

But there is something wrong in Apple Messages on Mac.

If I type in the text replacement phase, nothing happens.

BUT if I put a space before typing it, it works.

So you end up writing the replacement phrase twice and then going back to delete the first one which takes time, defeating the purpose.

Messages on iPhone works fine

Anyone else have the same issue?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

System Settings -> Keyboard -> Text Replacement is working just fine on my Mac (Sonoma 14.7.1, 14" MacBook Pro w/M1 Pro CPU chip) and on my iPhone (iOS 18.1, iPhone 12 Pro).

My trigger phrases start with a comma to avoid accidental triggers

,safe

,smc

,feedback

etc...

In all cases, I just enter the trigger phrase, and I am offered the replacement text which I generally select with either typing a space AFTER the trigger phrase, or pressing the return key.
