OS X Yosemite - resetting my MacBook to trade in

I am resetting my MacBook to its factory settings so that I can trade it in. I am up to the part where I need to reinstall the software so that it will go back to start up.

it is telling me to download OS X Yosemite. However, when I get to the install OS X, it says ‘select disk where you want to install OS X’ but it doesn’t give me any options and I am stuck with what to do next.

does anyone know how to help?

You need to erase the whole physical SSD (Intel Macs only) since older versions of macOS don't understand the new drive layout & APFS file system used by later versions of macOS.

I highly recommend you first create a bootable macOS USB installer using the instructions in the following Apple article since installing macOS through Internet Recovery Mode isn't working well these days especially for the older versions of macOS & older systems. While they don't specifically mention Yosemite, you can modify the instructions for El Capitan. Better yet install El Capitan or even the last supported OS for your Mac.
