Internal Camera not recognized on Sequoia 15.1

When I updated to Sequoia 15.1, the internal camera on my MacBook Pro M1 2020 stopped being recognized by the system. The camera does not appear in the system information "camera" tab, FaceTime displays a "To use FaceTime, connect a camera" message, and upon running Apple Diagnostics, I received an NDC001 Reference Code. Apple support's suggestion was to take the computer into a physical location to be checked (which I plan on doing), but I doubt it is a hardware issue given that it stopped working after I performed a system update to the new operating system which allows for the Handoff functionality. I followed Apple's steps to attempt to fix camera issues, including an SMC reset, to no avail. Is this a known issue?

Hardware, including the Builtin Camera can fail at any time.

It is not necessary related to the upgrade or update

Usually, when System Information reports the Camera is not present

That and the AHT reporting what it has

This would confirm a Hardware Failure - Camera

!!! UPDATE !!!

Just wanted to share that my camera issue has been resolved! I visited the Apple Store and spoke with a support engineer who ran an Apple diagnostic—and boom, the problem was fixed.

Interestingly, I had tried running the Apple diagnostic myself a few times before going to the store. Each time, it only took about a minute to complete. However, at the store, the process took around five minutes for the same test.

The best part? It didn’t cost me a thing—it was completely free! Hope this helps others who’s struggling with the same issue.

All the best!

I worked for an organization that has had this issue since Sonoma 14.6. A few random folks have it happen where it seems like the camera starts up and then stops every few seconds. MOST of the time upgrading has actually resolved the issue for them.

Given we've had the exact same thing happen to a group of about five or six of our users, I'd say its not hardware. Frustrating that Apple isn't acknowledging it...

Respectfully

OP Specifically mentions a MacBook Pro M1 2020 and in the same sentence Specifically mentions a 9 Month old Mac Mini

They also specifically mentioned and quote " Internal Camera  "

So far so good ?

1 - There has never been a Builtin Camera on a Mac Mini - full stop

2 - Builtin Camera would appear in Camera category of System Information

3 - If it does not appear - this could be a indicator of a Hardware Failure

I have a 1TB Harddrive 2019 MacBook Pro 13’’ and since it updated to sequoia 15.1.1 it’s suddenly stopped recognising the internal camera. It was fine Monday evening last week and suddenly today nope. It’s not even recognising the camera in Photo Booth. I’ve checked privacy and permissions and they’re all still fine. I have a really important meeting tomorrow at 12pm and it’s going to let me down

I updated to Sequoia 15.1.1 two weeks back. My camera was working just fine until day before, 12/11/24. Suddenly, it says "To use Facetime, connect a camera." Checked the permissions and rebooted laptop multiple times, but camera is not recognized on any of the applications that have permission.

I had to turn off the camera in an important interview today. Was a tense 15 min before the interview as I casually checked if all was working fine, and nothing I did could turn the camera back on. Few hours later, still the same issue. :(

I’m sorry to hear about your experience; I went through something similar. I booked an exam on Saturday to take on Monday and used the vendor’s utility to check system readiness—everything seemed fine. That same day, I was prompted to update to version 15.1.1, which I did, assuming all would be well. However, on Monday, when I attempted to take the exam, my camera didn’t work. I spent 30 minutes troubleshooting without success and ultimately had to cancel the exam.

For me, an older intel iMac and USB camera no longer works with 15.2, OK with 15.1

In System Information the Camera is now listed in USB as:

Miscellaneous Device:

  Product ID: 0x2811

Vendor ID: 0x093a  (Pixart Imaging, Inc.)

  Version: 1.00

  Speed: Up to 480 Mb/s

  Location ID: 0x14341000 / 13

  Current Available (mA): 500

  Extra Operating Current (mA): 0
