Music App broke after Sonoma 14.7.1 - on a MacBook Air 2018 Intel - virtual memory code problem?

Had problems getting Sonoma 14.7.1 release to run on my MacBook Air - finally got it down via the App Store.

Several days later, the Music app hung as I was preparing a playlist, needed a ‘Force Quit’ and I have never been able to open it since. When I launch, it opens for a few seconds then shuts down completely. Have tried the many different suggestions in various threads on this forum, including:

  • in Privacy & Security Settings - moving the Music app into the ‘Media and Apple Music’ icon, as well as giving Music Full Disk Access

  • re-starting the Mac in Safe Mode and re-starting again

  • re-starting the Music App in Safe Mode and re-starting again

  • re-loading Sonoma 14.7.1 - & ensuring sufficient space - and re-started

  • reviewed and disabled login items (there was a greyed out version of the Music app at this point?) - and re-started

  • tried accessing Music via various back doors - including launching an individual song file in the music library, and through Shazam - all with the same result - opens for a few seconds and closes.

  • various other things to try seemed to involve being able to open the Music app in the first place (e.g. try signing out), but can’t get in there to try any of those either :).

Someone in our house with more coding experience than mine (which is nil!) had a look at the crash report - apparently the following line points to a coding error for the virtual memory, which has to go back to the Apple coders??? And yes, I’ve sent the diagnostic reports in a few times now after repeated crashes.

Kernel Triage:

VM - (arg = 0x3) mach_vm_allocate_kernel failed within call to vm_map_enter

Which means apparently there’s nothing else I can do, so looks to be a waiting game for an OS update at some point to fix the code????

Or any other suggestions on anything that may be working for others - seems to be a lingering problem esp with Sonoma with diff things working sometimes for diff folks?

Found a way through on my setup i.e. 2018 Mac Book Air Intel with a T2 security chip, and noting I download music via iTunes, not via Apple Music subscription.

And no, the Sonoma 14.7.2 update did not help - Music on Mac app is still v1.4.6 after that release.

Looks like the mapping / links between my Music on Mac app and my Music Library file were broken.

So, a long story short is the following got my music app back up and running on my MacBook Air . . .

1. In the Finder (directory), located the file ‘Music Library’

2. Moved that file to Macintosh HD / Users / name / Music / iTunes (see part image below). I s'pose the ‘Music Library’ file may go somewhere else in the directory, depending on different music purchasing and playing approaches - trial and error at this point I found ;)

3. Double-clicked on the ‘Music Library’ file in this new location, and the Music on Mac app opened for the first time in 5 weeks.

4. Once inside the Music app, ran ‘Consolidate your files in the Music folder’ - see this Apple Support link >>>  Change where your music files are stored on Mac – Apple Support (UK)

  • Lost my playlists in the process, but can cope with that - needed a clean-out anyway.

  • I do have to re-download stuff that I want to play off-line (as per this Apple Support link >>> Download previous iTunes Store purchases in Music on Mac – Apple Support (UK) - catch here seems to be the ‘Download all’ function only relates to ‘download all tracks on an album’ - not download ALL purchases ever made - even when the ‘Not in My Library‘ tab is selected. Continuing to fiddle with that though to see what’s possible.

  • Cos of the need to re-download tracks I want to access off-line (as I’ve always been able to do in the past), has led to reading about and wondering if this prob come from iTunes Match updates, or just the new file location of my Music Library. I don’t use iTunes Match, am not an Apple Music subscriber, I just buy & download music direct out of iTunes. Anyway, one for another day :)

Main thing for my use now is >>> after 5 weeks of nothing, I now have access to my 35Gb music library via Music on Mac using iTunes downloads :)

minor update - I still experience a crash every now and then when working on a playlist - able to get back into the app after the crash thankfully, but no other fixes for this so far. So continuing to hope for resolution in later OS updates - have seen elsewhere mention of a possible Apple update for similar prob in Sequioa OS, so maybe, maybe . . .
