I don't have my playlists on iTunes, and I can't sync to my iPod.

Since iTunes no longer supports songs, I can’t sync the songs on my iPod 7th generation.

I can only transfer songs to my iPhone 14 through Apple Music. What should I do to listen music with my iPod?

I use Windows 10 on my PC.

Windows, Windows 6

You have misunderstood both Apple's message (which is easy to do) and my replies.

Apple have two products named Apple Music:

    • Apple Music - the service
    • Apple Music - the app (or application, or programme)

They are two totally different things.

  • Apple Music the service is the subscription service for which you pay a monthly fee which gives you access to Apple's music library for as long as you pay that subscription
  • Apple Music the app is a programme intended by Apple to be part of the replacement for iTunes

If you install the programme (application) on your computer, your iTunes layout will be changed and all you will see is Podcasts and Audiobooks. My understanding is that to revert back to the iTunes showing all of your library, you will need to uninstall the Apple Music app.

Perhaps the Apple Music that wasn't installed on your computer was in fact the subscription service. The Apple Music that prevents you from accessing your music is the app, not the service that you pay for monthly.

and now iTunes no longer works.

I disagree. Mine does.

Here is a screenshot from my iTunes library today:

  1. today's date in my iTunes Library, showing songs that have just finished playing. Compare the time and date shown for the song that has most recently finished playing (23/11/24 16:19)* with the Windows date shown in the lower right corner at 2.
  2. the date from Windows
  3. the Now Playing window in iTunes, showing a song playing now
  4. the total number of songs in my library, of which the four that have just finished playing and the one that's playing now, are part

Personally, I was not aware of the message window that you show us, but that may be because I have not started using the new applications, not least because they don't do everything that I need them to do.

I used Google Translate to make sure I understood what the message you see is saying. Yes, I can see what it is saying but that does not mean that iTunes no longer works. But to use the old style iTunes, you need to abandon the Apple Music and Apple TV apps (together with Apple Devices if you have installed that).

* For the benefit of anyone who is confused by the date shown in the screenshots, that is the format used in the UK: 23rd November 2024.

It is now 16:58 UK time, about 39 minutes after my screenshots were taken.

"Forced" is a bit strong.

To the best of my knowledge, all iPhones will still work with iTunes, but not if you using the Apple Music subscription service (or have the Apple Music app installed on your computer).

The Apple Music app is not yet a full replacement for iTunes, even though Apple are pushing it (as opposed to forcing it). The Apple Music subscription service is not compulsory. I don't use either.

Rather than repeatedly telling me something I've already addressed, why don't you try any of the following:

    • follow my suggestions
    • have a look through this forum for other discussions along the same lines, but don't simply look for ones that support what you believe, look instead for ones that might help you to fix your issue
    • start a new discussion with a subject header that indicates the issue, such as "will my iPhone 14 work with iTunes?" (one point to check is that the version of iTunes you're using is compatible with an iPhone 14. That simply means ensuring that you're using the latest version of iTunes, which today (27th November 2024) is 12.13.4.4).

Can you look at the attached screenshot? It says iTunes will now play music only on Apple Music and iTunes will be used for audiobooks and podcasts. This message and problem appeared even when Apple Music wasn’t installed on my computer, so having Apple Music isn’t the reason I can’t listen to music on iTunes. Apple Music seems to be designed solely for syncing with iPhones, leaving iPod users out, and now iTunes no longer works. An Apple representative suggested that installing only iTunes on a different computer might solve this issue. But I don’t have two PCs. So, it seems there’s no other solution to this problem yet.

I can't delete Apple Music because I need it to listen to music on my iPhone 14. Also, deleting Apple Music doesn’t solve the issue. Even when Apple Music wasn’t installed on my computer, I couldn’t use iTunes with my iPod anymore. That’s because the latest version of iTunes doesn’t support music. When I open iTunes, I get a message saying it only supports podcasts and audiobooks. I can’t revert to an older version of iTunes either because iTunes Library files created with a newer version aren’t compatible with older versions. Apple representative stated that, since the 7th generation iPod is an older device, it no longer provides software support for it.

That's your choice.

Also, deleting Apple Music doesn’t solve the issue.

It would.

Even when Apple Music wasn’t installed on my computer, I couldn’t use iTunes with my iPod anymore.

Then there is a different issue. You would need to describe the symptoms encountered before anyone could help sort that out, but not until and unless you abandon the new apps (mentioned again below).

That’s because the latest version of iTunes doesn’t support music.

I can assure you that it does. I use it.

When I open iTunes, I get a message saying it only supports podcasts and audiobooks.

You mean that the display shows only Podcasts and Audiobooks. As far as I know, there is no "message". That indicates that you have installed the Apple Music, the Apple TV and/or the Apple Devices apps. If you uninstall them you will see all of your library.

If uninstalling Apple Music would help iTunes work as it used to, how would I use Apple Music on both Windows and my iPhone? Because the Apple Music app on iPhone only integrates with the Apple Music app on Windows. Besides, as I mentioned before, this problem existed even when Apple Music wasn’t installed, so I doubt uninstalling Apple Music now would bring back my iPod playlists. Moreover, if I do this, I’d lose access to my iPhone playlists as well.

The problem is that the same playlists need to work on both the iPhone and the iPod. Just like how the Music app on the iPhone used to integrate seamlessly with iTunes before Apple Music existed.

It that case you are faced with a choice that only you can make.

The only thing I can suggest is that you create an additional user account on your computer, install iTunes on that account and then see whether you can have the Apple Music setup on one user account and the traditional personal music library on the other. In theory, that would work and you could then synchronise the iPod on the library account and your phone on the Apple Music account.

However, it might not and even if it does, there are almost certain to be adjustments needed in order to make it work.

Here's a thought; if you have a large collection of music that you have purchased, then why do you need Apple Music?

Because Apple Music forced me into this. The Music app on the iPhone didn’t work with the new version of iTunes, all my playlists disappeared, and iTunes presented me with the error message I had previously sent, saying it now only supports audiobooks and podcasts. That’s why I installed the Apple Music app on Windows and tried syncing. Apple Music didn’t work properly; some songs and playlists were missing. If you know of a free app that lets me listen to offline music on my iPhone and transfer my tracks from my PC, let me know, and I won’t need Apple Music anymore.

I don't have my playlists on iTunes, and I can't sync to my iPod.
