HLG files not always output as HLG

Hi,

I have a strange oddity when processing HLG files on Final Cut Pro X. I have an Osmo Pocket 3, I record in HLG, when the memory card is plugged into the TV all the files show as HLG. When I process the files as wide colour HLG and export them as HLG, the exported file does not always show as being HLG even though the settings have not changed, the TV does display Dolby Vision but not that the file is in HLG. Again, this does not happen for all the files created in HLG, the majority display as HLG. It is not a great problem, the files look great but just cannot work out why they are being handled differently. Any thoughts?

Hi Joema,

Once I have completed the videos I copy them onto an external SSD, I plug the SSD into the USB port of my TV and watch them back without transcoding so I can playback a 60fps video at 60fps. The TV will automatically identify the format and display a banner if it is HLG or Dolby Vision, see below. I am using a macbook air M1 silicon.

Hi Ben,

I have computer option selected and export as Dolby Vision 8.4, HLG, this is the same for all the Pocket 3 videos processed, but not all finished videos are shown to be HLG by the TV so they are handled differently by the TV. Not the greatest problem but just curious to know why.

Regards,

Neil.

"When I process the files as wide colour HLG and export them as HLG, the exported file does not always show as being HLG." Please give us more specifics on your procedure. The exported file does not always show as being HLG -- where? On your Mac screen or the TV? Is your Mac connected to the TV via HDMI? Or are you copying the exported file to a memory card and putting that in the TV? Please state the year and model of your Mac. If it has a separate monitor (besides the TV), state the make, model and specifications of the monitor.

Does the TV have a list of accepted formats? TVs are notoriously finicky about what bitrate, what encoding, etc. they will accept.

When you edit the Rec.2020 HLG video in FCP, it should be in a Wide Gamut HDR library, and you should use a custom project (timeline), saying: 'Wide Gamut HDR - Rec. 2020 HLG'. The file should be exported using File>Share>Export File>Settings, Format: Computer, Video Codec: 'HEVC (10-bit, HLG, Dolby Vision 8.4)', Resolution: 1080p or 4k.

FCP Settings>General should have HDR: Automatic Color Conform enabled. Select the clip and the Video Inspector at the bottom should have Color Conform enabled, type=Automatic.

Using the above settings, export the clip, put it on the SSD and see if the TV plays it as expected.

Note: your M1 MacBook Air only has a regular 400-nit LED screen. HLG is an HDR format and assumes you have the ability to edit that on an HDR screen. Otherwise whatever grading you do on your MacBook Air is "blind" and when it's played on your TV, that's the first time you see it in HDR form (assuming the TV playback works).
