How can I clear “other” storage permanently on my iPad?

Hello Community, I would just like to ask a quick question. Would appreciate an answer.


How can I clear most of the “OTHER” storage permanently?


I have no storage for iPadOS18.

System storage includes a lot of cached data. iPadOS16 and later appears to make more use of available storage for temporary system caches.


Reported System Data (a.k.a. “other data”) can be expected to fluctuate. Your iPad will automatically and optimally manage its available system resources, using available free space to cache data and improve overall performance.


The only element of system storage that you can directly influence is perhaps your browser caches - which you can manually clear if you wish to do so.


For Safari:

Settings > Safari > Clear History & Website Data


For other browsers, you’ll need to find the relevant section of the App settings - which may be within the App itself.


Otherwise, transient system caches can be significantly reduced by performing a forced-restart of your iPad - although caches, by their nature, will again accumulate and be automatically managed by the operating system.


Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.




Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

System Software Update


It is generally recommended that you maintain at least 4-6GB of free space at all times - as your iPad needs some temporary space to complete some tasks - such as performing system software updates.


A system software update requires sufficient space to be downloaded, unpacked and verified prior to installation - major version updates (such as updating from iPadOS 17.x to iPadOS 18.x) requiring considerably more space than an incremental point-update. You will typically temporarily require double the declared storage space of the update. After the update is successfully completed, temporary files are automatically deleted - returning free space.


If your internal storage is full, or is insufficient for the task that you need to perform, your only option is to better manage the storage that you have - and delete unused Apps or unneeded data.

External storage options can often help with managing limited internal storage. Depending upon your iPad model, the iPad will either have a Lightning or USB-C port - and may therefore require either an Adapter or USB hub to connect the USB Storage device. Be aware that while an iPad may be capable of update, in some circumstances you may need to use a computer to perform the update*. To do so, you will need access to either a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS). Ensure that your installed version of iTunes has been updated to the most recent version; the essential device drivers are included.

If you have a beta profile installed, ensure this has been removed from your iPad - as, otherwise, installation of production software updates may be inhibited. This support page provides the necessary information to remove the beta from your iPad:

You should note that for your iPad to install an available update, its battery must be charged to at least 50% capacity - and/or be connected to its Power Adapter. Similarly, the iPad can only be updated over a standard WiFi connection - or be updated by a PC or Mac using iTunes or Finder - over a USB connection.

Hey LotusPilot, thanks so much for the detail. I appreciate your long response.


However, I’ve found that I can backup to iCloud/Computer and then restore from the backup, then that clears the system data. I had about 15GB of free space, then I tried to update.

”More storage required, 14.23GB required.”

I have 14.23 GB available, so why is it not letting me update?
