iCloud Music Library not showing all songs

Hi. Thanks for ruining my weekend.

I have 5,131 songs on my Windows 11 computer.

Foobar2000, which actually functions properly, tells me so.

I try to add these files to my Apple Music, because Apple insists on installing proprietary garbage on my system, so I have to use it to upload my music to my phone.

A couple albums don't make their way through, so I add them after the fact.

Apple Music on Windows 11 reports 5,131 tracks. Good. Functional. Surprising for Apple.

I go to the "update cloud library" button. I have clicked this around fifty times.

Apple Music on Windows pretends that it worked, but 172 songs get marked as "duplicate". (Also, why does the number that appears when dragging and dropping songs in Apple Music turn into garbled symbols? I shouldn't have to make a deciphering key to tell how many songs I have.)

I go and verify on my iPhone with a shortcut programmed to tell me how many songs I have on my phone.

It returns 5,062(!!!)

This is discongruent with the 5,131 figure, and even if I were to assume that it didn't add the 172 duplicates, that wouldn't add up to 5,062, that would add up to 4,979(!!!)

Why not just upload my MP3s onto my iCloud library?? If I have duplicates, that's my own **** problem. Stop trying to pretend you know better than your users.

Id like to know how you even got started putting your music on the cloud? I have yet to find out how. Every link Ive come across says you cannot add music to iCloud?

iCloud Music Library is a feature of the Apple Music and iTunes Match subscription services. It can match with existing content in the iTunes Store/Apple Music catalog, or upload your own files if no match is found. It is distinct from the general iCloud services that Apple offer. iCloud Drive is not intended for music storage or transfer.

The Apple Music app for Windows seems to be somewhat less effective than iTunes. Even then it can sometimes be tricky to get content correctly matched or uploaded. Some items (e.g. purchases from a different Apple ID) will be excluded, along with tracks that could be marked as error, ineligible, waiting, removed, etc. iCloud Music Library aims to exclude true duplicates, the same song added multiple times to the library. Have one copy of the song. Use that copy in any playlist where you want that song. Tidy. If you actually have two different versions of the same song then they ought to differ in some of the metadata so they can be distinguished. Typically your library will also list any unhidden purchases, but it could perhaps be the case that a track was added to your device, and is stored there locally, even though it has been removed from your computer. Or vice versa. The track counts won't necessarily tally.

Ya understand how it’s wanting to delete duplicates but unfortunately after downloading the Apple device app for windows and trying to do a sync of all my music, Apple and other places over the last 25 years. The app ended up deleting about 9000 songs of mine I purchased else were before coming to Apple. Only about 850 of the song that was purchased afterward from Apple did it save. So ya that app screwed me. Luckily I was smart enough to have backups on external drives. Even after all that I gave that app another try and it was successful this time but ended up deleting about 85% of my music album art. Sigh 😞….ya is it a win or still a loss? Not to mention it deleted about 110 full length movies and over 1000 photos from over 20 years time. That apple device app blows for sure… got to an easier way to sync music photos and movies with iPhone and your PC.
