How do I change color/image of my file icon on MacBook Pro?

My file icons such as Word-documents, or music files always show a white/gray/blank color. I want to change the image, or color to this files, so I can quickly see what sort of file it is (mp3, or PDF, or Docs). I know there is a way with Preview to change the image of a file, but I want it then to do it with ALL the same files automatically and not just one. Is there a way to fix this?
