I have a large batch of photos on icloud that are gone from my imac. I selected a batch, successfully
downloaded and now have selected another batch but the conglomerate is too large. How do I
unselect the first batch from icloud, not delete them, so I can continue with the rest of my photos?

Is there some reason that you’re not just syncing to photos? Photos, settings, iCloud to enable sync.
otherwise, when selecting, be sure to click the first item independent of selecting the group. That should be all that you need to do.
