My mac is running hot

When idling or even lid closed, mac is running hot indicating it's not sleeping and there are some processes running

activity monitor shows three processes always on top for CPU Time

  • mds_stores
  • mediaanalysisd
  • something simmiar media scan but can't find it right now because i just rebooted

How can I determine if mac is really sleeping when lid is closed? I tried pinging it but it doesn't respond for some reason even when running due to this problem i cant ping my mac - Apple Community

Thanks

i'm on macOS Sequoia 15.1 with a Intel based macbook pro

you can get most of the way there by holding the caps-lock key until it lights, then choose Sleep off the Apple menu.

If the light goes out, your Mac is actually sleeping. if not, lid closed will be no different.

Activity Monitor (all processes) Energy pane shows a column that indicates "Prevents Sleep"
