application to rename files in a folder

I am trying to get an application from the Apple App Store to batch rename files in a folder. It must be easy to use and be reliable, but I don't know which one to use. For now, I have to rename the files manually by selecting the file name then type in the text.

As an example:

change a set of camera file names from:

to be renamed as:

  • I have tried to use the inbuilt procedure by right click a set of files and select Rename, however there are no instructions available and it won't rename the files as I need.

  • I'v tested "Easy Rename" in the App Store and again there are no instructions on how to use it and I cant get it to rename correctly.

  • I believe the Photos app has a procedure, but I will never use this app.

I'm looking for suggestions on an app you have used and therefore can make an informed opinion.

I'm running Mac OS Ventura, on iMac.

Thanks for reading this.

I use A Better Finder Rename to rename image files from my cameras and it's awesome. Have used it for years to rename all sorts of files & folders in batches. Easy to use, extensive renaming features including multi-step renaming, which comes in handy. Plus it shows the resulting renames before you commit the renaming process.

There is a free trial, so you can give it a whirl to see if you like it. (btw, it is available from the author, not the App Store, but it is legitimate Mac software.)

Have you tried... Finder?

A lot of people seem to not know that Finder can batch rename files.

Select the files, control- or right-click and choose Rename...

You can add some text, do a replace, or choose a sequential numbering.

In this case, you could just set the name part empty, and start the numbers.

This would name them 000000007.jpg, etc.

Then use the same command, but with the replace option, and replace a number of zeros by nothing, ending up with 07.jpg, etc as desired.
