I had the same problem with an 2 month on 15pro max. After 2 weeks and multiple restarts I went to an Apple Store. The true depth camera came up as faulty in store (phone diagnostic was clear but in store can dive a bit deeper). After the repair is worked for 2 days and then the fault returned. After updating to iOS 18.1.1 on 19 November the fault cleared and I could set up faceID again

I went to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and under “Use Face ID for” I turned off “iPhone Unlock”. I then  powered off, rebooted and turned “iPhone Unlock” back on. Face ID for unlock was then working again. 

I cleaned the front-facing camera and now Face ID works.

My iPhone 12 also stopped working after the 18.1 update and did not work after the 18.2 update either. Since people mentioned the depth camera may be a problem, I cleaned the front camera lens on a whim, and the face ID works now.

I took my phone out of its protective case, and I was able to setup face ID. It's worth trying that.

Thank you for that suggestion. Was able to set up after taking off case. Works with case back on now.

It seems like a software glitch. My phone did exactly the same thing. Reset Face ID but true depth camera doesn’t recognise anything and the square frame won’t change to a circle and start mapping the face. I booked in to an apple store 2 days later. The night before my appointment I tried to set up Face ID again and it worked. If you have warranty keep taking it back to apple. If not, just keep trying to set up faceID. Never turn on stolen device protection. If faceID stops working SDP is an absolute nightmare

18.1.1 fixed it for me.

I have an iPhone 12 Pro. Sience, 18.1.1 FaceID is not working. Apple Software Support said Hardware is working. Today, I was in an Apple Store. They said I have to replace the true deepth camera.

I have an IPhone 12 and updated to 18.1.1 and like others on this forum Face ID stopped working. I tried resetting it. I put my face in the frame and it says “higher “ then “lower” to keep face in frame but it never finds the sweet spot. Very very frustrating. I’ve also tried restarting my phone. Not be of it has worked. Will Apple come back and fix this? I did the update two days ago.

and while in the 18.1.1 update. Freeking alarm no longer has volume control. It’s awful

After update to 18.1.1 the Face ID stop working on my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I have reset it and I’m trying set up it again but instead of coming up a circle it’s coming up a square asking the put your face on the frame and nothing happens. Can you help me.
