Watching Apple TV on my television

I’ve just noticed that not all Apple TV programmes that are available on my iPhone are available on my tv. I was just looking for a show on my phone and purchased it on my iPhone Apple app. When I went to watch it later in my tv it isn’t there and when I search it says programme unavailable. I’ve searched for other shows that I know are available on my iPhone and they’re not on the tv app either. Can anyone advise? I’ve purchased a series that I now can only watch on my iPhone 12!

Some TVs get the full Apple TV app, and some TVs get the specialized Apple TV+ app (with the Plus in the name). The difference is in what services these editions support:

Get the Apple TV app or Apple TV+ app on your smart TV or streaming device - Apple Support

Note that buy or rent movies are available on one but not the other. The Store and Library will be absent from the latter.

Unfortunately, it is not user choice for which edition you can get. Instead the device manufacturer has decided on this per model.

Unsupported TVs can get access to the full Apple TV app by connecting an external HDMI streaming device that supports the full app. That can be an Apple TV box, Roku, Fire TV, PlayStation (4, 5), Xbox (One, One S, X, S), ‘Chromecast with Google TV’-dongle, or Nvidia Shield TV box.
