Does anyone know what error 702 is or means and/or what can be done about it. This occurred during a system installation, probably three quarters of the way through. The latest time it occurred for me was during Ventura installation. This is the message I got on a Sonoma installation. The same thing happened with Ventura.

Hey, thanks for the additional information. Even with a bootable USB, the mac still requires an internet connection. This is not needed to download macOS, instead the internet connection is required to retrieve firmware and other information related to the model of the mac. Check out this link here for more info.

Good question, and I'm certainly not an expert on how all of the backend mechanics work. But this is my understanding of the process. When you boot from a macOS installer (like a USB drive), the installer on the USB includes the necessary network drivers. During the setup, you may select a Wi-Fi network with the menu in the top right corner, or connect via Ethernet. With that connection, it can then download any additional drivers or retrieve necessary information for the installation. Hope this helps!

I don't know what the error code is but may have a workaround for you: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and try installing from there. That helped me on a couple of occasions.
Note: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will assure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Hey, thanks for the update. It looks like it's having a hard time downloading the needed files for the installation. Are you on wireless? If so, are you able to try a wired connection? That can also happen from the time being off in the recovery environment. This link can help you manually change it from the terminal if you're comfortable running commands.

Lastly, you could also try to reset your NVRAM. Here is Apple's article for that.

It failed again with a different error message.
I save the installation log which was long and full of errors. I saved it to the Documents folder which was offered. I can’t find the log in any Documents folder. My system is more without Internet so I’m a bit hamstrung.
Sorry, I missed this comment. You're using a mac with Apple Silicon. These macs do not need their NVRAM reset. Please disregard.

Hey, you're in the Recovery environment? Could you open the Recovery Log? This helps with looking for errors that could be causing the issue. While installing macOS, check the top menu Window > Installer Log could you check for errors? Are you able to add screenshots of the errors when this issue occurs?

I’m installing from a USB jump drive boot installer. I would have thought everything necessary was already downloaded. Perhaps the original download was defective. I’ll try again tomorrow. Currently without power and no WiFi.
I'm curious about this. If you're using a boot installer onto a clean drive how does the system find and recognize an internet connection? The boot installer can't do it, and the newly installed system has not been initialize and knows nothing about any internet connections. How does this work?

I also get error 702 when installing Sonoma, how can I solve it, does anyone already know the solution to this problem. I try to install it on an external ssd kingston xs1000 1tb.

Thank you. I forgot to mention I’m use a USB boot installer. Failed with Sonoma, worked yesterday with Sequoia, failed today with Ventura.
What model and year is your Mac? It's not a silicon Mac is it?
Since I'm stuck on an Intel Mac running Ventura I've not had hands on experience with the advanced systems.
It’s a 14” 2021 M1 Max MBP.
There was an Internet connection. The problem may have been related to that, but if so the error message should certainly be more explicit. Of nothing else it’s common courtesy.

During the initialization process we always have to tell the system the network we're on and the password, which it thinks about for a while.
