When you select one, have an idea what you going plug into it in addition to the Mac so you know how robust a model to select. The things you will want to plug in are things like external HD's or external SSD. The types of things you don't want to plug in are printers and scanners.

First, no software is needed. Too many software packages for external hard drives, battery backups, and similar gear are kludgy and can slow your Mac: some do not even work on Macs.

I've used battery backups on Macs since 1997 and have never installed the software that came with the battery backup.
